Which language would be the best for middle tier?

What makes a language Germanic and what makes a language Slavic? And other questions...?

  • Also when it comes to European languages are there simply put into Germanic or Slavic or is Romance languages (ie Romanian) a whle different tier? Which language type is more common Germanic and Slavic? Since Germanic and Slavic languages are from Europe what tiers do languages from places like Asia, Africa and the Middle East go into or would they just be grouped into Slavic or Germanic? Is Modern Greek a Slavic or Germanic language? Is it a romance language? Is English a Romance language? I know Romance languages are called that because they are derived from Latin? English is partially derived from Latin but I've never heard it referred to as a Romance language. Why? Sorry for all the questions I thought I'd get them all out of the way in one hit.

  • Answer:

Most European languages (except Basque, Finnish and Hungarian) belong to the family of Indo-European languages, one of the world's major language families, and ultimately are derived from a hypothetical Proto-Indo-European (PIE) language. The main subdivisions of the Indo-European languages are : Albanian Anatolian (Extinct) Armenian Balto-Slavic (Baltic and Slavic) Celtic Germanic Hellenic (Greek) Indo-Iranian (Indic and Iranian) Italic (includes Romance) Tocharian (Extinct) Other major language families are Afro-Asiatic languages, Austro-Asiatic languages, Austronesian languages, Dravidian languages, Mongolic languages, Niger-Congo languages, Nilo-Saharan languages, Sino-Tibetan languages and Turkic languages.

It's a large combination of things. For how they are differentiated, it is usually by phonology and how the language is constructed. For instance, African languages might use clicks where European languages will use words. Same meaning, different way of going about it. If you wiki "Language Families" it will answer a lot of this. If that wiki doesn't work, search Indo-european and go through the links. The romance languages are only those directly derived from latin. Italian, Spanish, French. English is far more Germanic than it is Latin. Yet again, a wiki will answer that.
