Do you need to learn Czech too if you want to fully integrate into Slovak society?
-
I'm asking whether foreigners feel compelled to learn Czech because Slovaks assume that everybody who speaks Slovak also speaks/understands Czech. Slovaks may watch a Czech movie or use Czech phrases (not translated into Slovak) and it is assumed that everyone understands Czech. The same thing in the workplace - it is assumed that when you work with Czechs firms/colleagues there are no problems with the language.

Answer:
You see both Czech and Slovak lands were part of Austro-Hungarian Empire. When the Empire fell apart after the first World War, the Czechs and Slovaks gained independence and thanks to strong bonds, similar culture etc. joined their nations to form Czechoslovak Republic...and with the exception of the second World War we were united until 1992... So that is why many Slovaks understand Czech language (plus Slovak TVs are often using czech dubbing so they don't need to pay for their own version-that is the reason why Slovaks understand Czech perfectly, but Czechs do not understand Slovak very well) So there is no need to learn Czech. It is given mostly by historic circumstances, but it's not like you NEED to learn Czech..But considering that there still are some Czech shows on Slovak TV stations it is possible that you will learn some Czech without even knowing.

There aren't that many foreigners in Slovakia, or people who learn Slovak as a second language and therefore this would be a very unusual situation. But no I don't think that you would need to study the Czech language specifically to be able to "fully integrate" into Slovak society. Czech language is not as commonly heard in Slovakia as you might think, so you probably wouldn't even think about it unless you're actually going to the Czech Republic. Also, because of the mutual intelligibility you probably won't be having much trouble understanding Czech anyways, and if you don't catch some words chances are there will be some Slovak people who also won't know what it means (its not true that all Slovak people can understand Czech perfectly).

ROFL :-D The fact, that Slovaks understands Czech means, that the majority of vocabulary is the same or very similar. No Slovak needs to learn Czech to understand Slovak so it is ridiculous that a foreign who wants to live in Slovakia and can speak Slovak would need to learn Czech. It means only that you will probably understand (of course a bit less than Slovak people) Czech too. I still don't know what you're asking. I think it was said clear that who speaks Slovak well understands Czech too. So if you do, the question is pointless. Maybe you meant that you're afraid that you'll have a handicap compare to another Slovaks. Off course you will. So if you're going to work in a literally Czech company in Slovakia then yes, you will have bigger problem than another. But it wouldn't be that much serious problem, I suppose you will be a bit like an average teenage Czech who don't understands Slovak that much like an average Slovak understands Czech. Still we can communicate together and furthermore you'll learn in the course of time spontaneously.
