How to apply for grants to study a foreign language abroad?

Are we being pushy wanting our daughter to study a 4th language at GCSE?

  • She is being given the chance to study Russian at school, but it would mean combining the two year course into one. It would be her 13th subject overall. She is wanting to study French with either Russian or German at university and she wants to study Russian at A level. My husband and I think it would be good for her to have the basic understanding and the knowledge of Russian grammar before she goes into her A levels. She already studies 12 subjects and this is 2-3 more than most other kids at her school but she gives up a lot of her free time at school to do it because she wanted to do 12 as she knew she could do 12, that and she didn't want to have to pick one science or one language. She is doing well having 12 subjects, she's pulling A's in all but one, but she's talked to her teacher about improving the grade and it's now a B but she's working on getting an A in that too. She asked her father and I if we thought she should take the extra class, meaning two days a week she wouldn't finish at school until around half five in the evening, my husband told her she should, whilst I said should if that is what she wants to do but that she might want to drop some of her after school things like drama or tennis. She says she wants to be a translator, though my husband would prefer she worked for his company. But she's not sure which language she wants to translate to - she can't decide between French to Russian and French to German, though if she wanted she could translate English to French, German and Russian. Her language teacher wants her answer by friday if she wants to study it or not.

But only a few days ago you said she was pregnant and being scouted for modelling? How much more is this poor girl supposed to fit into her life?

yes very pushy I'm afraid... She doesn't really need to do the 4th language, I would recommend for her to do French, I'm currently doing my A-levels at the moment, studying 2 languages, and planning on carrying on with languages next year, if your daughter is planning on studying languages at university then she can always do Russian at a beginners level which is possible since French is not available from scratch that would be a advantage for her.

If she wants to study 4 languages, then it's her choice. But there is a chance that she might get stressed from remembering the languages and keeping her grades up. Encourage her to spend some time with her friends and take a break once in a while. It's a very good thing that she is thinking about her future and doing very well in school, but she needs to take a breather too, humans needs a break sometime! Hope this helped!

You could ask her teachers who are the experts or read relevant uni online prospectus? Or did you merely want to posture on here? Sounds like a child who is being micromanaged and is desperately seeking approval from her parents to the detriment of her youth. Pressure comes soon enough in life. New Boots - LOLOLOL really? Wow feel so inadequate now, my daughter is currently watching family guy ON A SCHOOL NIGHT!

Your daughter sounds a lot like me at school, I studied three languages (the maximum available at the time) and I also studied more subjects than the other students, but I pushed myself - my parents didn't push me, though they did have very high expectations. When I got to university I studied languages, but I wasn't happy - I dropped out in the first year and I'm so proud of myself. I had the confidence to act when so many other students continued, miserable, with low grades, a big debt and terrible jobs at the end. Now, I'm 26, I'm studying with Open University, I will have completed my science degree in just over a year and I'm happy. For the first time in a long time I'm genuinley happy. I know what I want to do, I know what I'm aiming for now and I'll do everything I can to reach my goals. Please be careful - you could be pushing too hard in the wrong direction. You never know, your daughter could achieve something amazing in a different field but she needs to be able to explore her options herself. This could be the right path for her, but in 10 years time when she decides that it was your dream and not hers, she may realise she's wasted a lot of time, energy and money - all to keep her mum happy.
