English is the most commonly shared language or lingua franca in the world. This is due to the fact that it is used for commerce and the internet. This became so due to the fact that the British/American world empire was the largest and many countries had to learn English in order to do business with others. India was greatly affected by being a member of the British commonwealth and many children were taught in English at school as there were so many different languages spoken within India that they needed to find a common language in which to produce text books and teach all the children. Hence English was used as a 'common language' and also was seen as being like a ticket to the world of business for the pupils. In banking, Russian and Chineese are becoming popular. Also Spanish is very popular, not only spoken in Spain, but also in Latin America.
