Help with Response to Literature Essay?

  • I have to write a response to literature essay for my Honors English class, but I don't know where to start. This is the first essay I've ever had to write like this. These are the instructions: Martin Luther King Jr. said, "In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends." Think about this quotation as it relates to how people treat one another and the ill effects of betrayal and the importance of loyalty. Write an essay for an interested adult explaining your thoughts as they relate to this quotation. So any help on where to start? :)

  • Answer:

    First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Socialist. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out -- because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me -- and there was no one left to speak for me.
