What's up with the sympathy card?

Is this a good quote to use in a sympathy card?

  • Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade, When in eternal lines to time thou growest: So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this and this gives life to thee. It's Shakespeare...I was thinking of using it on a sympathy card. Is it weird that the speaker addresses the reader as "thee" even though the card is supposed to be talking about the person who died? For example, instead of "So long lives this and this gives life to thee"....would it be better if it said "So long lives this and this gives life to (your husband)? Because obviously the card isn't for the person who died, it's for their family. Does this quote seem appropriate?

    No. Emphatically, no! The purpose for a sympathy card is to express your own personal feelings of sympathy to the recipient, not to parrot someone else's thoughts and words. Be original. Speak from your heart. Be sincere. Espousing someone else's thoughts does little more than tell the reader that you either don't really have real sympathy for them or you're just doing what is expected and nothing more. Put yourself in their place. What would you want to read in your time of need?

No. Emphatically, no! The purpose for a sympathy card is to express your own personal feelings of sympathy to the recipient, not to parrot someone else's thoughts and words. Be original. Speak from your heart. Be sincere. Espousing someone else's thoughts does little more than tell the reader that you either don't really have real sympathy for them or you're just doing what is expected and nothing more. Put yourself in their place. What would you want to read in your time of need?
