The Great Gatsby quotes?

Disillusionment quotes in the Great Gatsby?

  • For my essay I need to explain how the concept of disillusionment is shown in the Great Gatsby through quotes about relationships not living up (Gatsby and Daisy) business is corrupt (wolfsheim and gatsby bootlegging) and religion (eyes of TJ eckleburg being the eyes of God) if anyone can give me some quotes and the page number it would be great. If you can not give me a page number, just the quotes would be just fine. Thank you :)

  • Answer:

Relationships not living up: "There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams - not though her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything." (pg. 92) Business is corrupt: "'I found out what your "drug-stores" were.' He turned to us and spoke rapidly. 'He and this Wolfshiem bought up a lot of side-street drug-stores here and in Chicago and sold grain alcohol over the counter. That's one of his little stunts. I picked him for a bootlegger the first time I saw him, and I wasn't far wrong.'" (pg. 127) Religion: "'God knows what you've been doing, everything you've been doing. You may fool me, but you can't fool God!' Standing behind him, Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg, which had just emerged, pale and enormous, from a dissolving night. 'God sees everything,' repeated Wilson. 'That's an advertisement,' Michaelis assured him." (pg. 152)

Sometimes, letting go seems like the easiest thing to do. But think about this: you've invested so much of your time and energy into another person; you've made a solemn promise; and you still know there's love, even if it's hiding underneath the surface.
