Sims 2 stuff (clothes, hair, etc.) be used on Sims 3?

I'm looking for a specific thing for my sim but it's not their on the website or rather.... it got deleted. the sims 2 site has more stuff for me to get but i only have sims 3.. (=_=) so i was wondering.... for example I downloaded a dress from the sims 2 site, can it be used on sims 3 for my sim? xDD dumb question, yes i know. but i was just wondering.
