Average Acceleration?

Physics - Average Acceleration?

  • If a Cessna 172 requires 20 seconds to reach its liftoff speed of 120 km/h, what is its average acceleration? - my answer (from using my book) would be to take 120km and divide it by 20s to equal 60 km/h as its average acceleration. But of course I'm not sure of my answer, so your help, answer, and explanation would help.

  • Answer:

120 divided by 20 is 6 not 60 But look at the units. 120 Km/hr / 20 sec = 6 Km/hr/sec It is actually an acceleration and it is valid. But the units are a hybrid so not usually acceptable for scientific purposes. To convert Km/hr to m/s multiply by m/Km (1000) and divide by s/hr (3600) i.e. divide by 3.6 So your velocity would have been 120/3.6 m/s and your acceleration would have been 6/3.6 m/s^2

you are mixing km/h and second. First you change 120km/h into m/s by dividing by 3.6. You got 33.3, and then you divid it by 20. The acceleration is of 1.67m/s^2, or 21.600km/h^2
