Physics calculation- does anyone understand the solution to this question?

Can anyone answer a physics comprehension question about particles, force and magnitude?

  • Two charged particles attract each other with a force of magnitude F. If the charge of one is tripled and the distance separating the particles in increased by a factor of 6, the force acting on each of the two particles has what magnitude? a) F/8 b) F/12 c) F/4 d) None of the above Could you please help me understand how you reached that conclusion? I don't understand it and I have a test coming up...any help or explanation on the answer would be a life saver!

  • Answer:

F=kq1q2/r^2 plug the numbers in and with a little algebra: F=k*3q1q2/(36*r^2)=[kq1q2/r^2]*1/12 b) F/12
