What is the amplitude of the waves?

What determines a waves' energy, frequency or amplitude?

  • SQA NQ Higher Physics states that amplitude of a wave determines its energy ie. the more the amplitude the more the energy. However NCERT 11th Chemistry states that frequency of a wave determines its energy. Even this equation shows that energy is directly proportional to frequency - E = hv (v is actually "nu". I can't type greek letters.) So what determines a waves energy?

  • Answer:

Frequency determines the energy of the wave; energy is independent of amplitude. Amplitude determines the INTENSITY of the wave.
