Calculating the angular acceleration.

Calculating acceleration?

  • I did a physics experiment in school and need to calculate the acceleration of a trolley. However, i only have the distance the trolley traveled and the time it took it to travel. How can i use this data to figure out the acceleration? Example data: Distance traveled= 0.5 meters Time it took to travel distance= 1.54 seconds Acceleration= ?

  • Answer:

    s = 0.5 * a * t^2 with s = distance (space) a = acceleration t = time 0.5 = 0.5 * a * 1.54^2 a = 0.4 m/s^2

Pretty simple. :) Just take the distance traveld divided by the time it took to travel the distance. youl get a long number like .32 something something blah blah.which isnt propper but that it breaks it down into milimeters and miliseconds and then just work up.

Term of accelerations is changing speed1(V1) at time1(t1) subtracted by speed2Vv2) at time2(t2) divided by time2-time1 . To get acceleration you should collect data of what speed of the trolley after distance(V2) 0.5 meter or time (t2)1.54 second. Let me give you an example: V2(speed after travel 0.5m) = 2 m/s. a = (V1-V2)/(t2-t1) = (2-0)/(1.54-0) = 1.3 m/s2. IYou may change it to decceleartion if you select v1 = 2 m/s and V1=0. good luck

Hi Emma, Supposing the trolley to have started from rest,we must use Newton's second equation of motion: S=ut+1/2*at^2 u=0(because trolley started from rest and initial velocity is 0) S=0.5 m t=1.54 s 0.5=1/2*a*(1.54)^2 a=(0.5*2)/1.54^2 =0.42165 m/s^2 Thank you for your patience.Good luck.

a=(v-v(knot))/t You know v knot =0 You can calculate v from dist/time
