Birth control question?

Birth control question?

  • On June 15th, I went to the doctor for an ear infection, the doctor prescribed Amoxicillin and I took two daily for 5 days. At the same time, I stopped taking my birth control (Levlen 24) to have my period. I had my period and after it was finished, I started back up on my birth control and I was no longer taking Amoxicillin. I have not taken amoxicillin for 8 days and have been taking my birth control since Tuesday. The doctor told me that the Amoxicillin would stay in my system until my cycle was finished and that I should use a backup method of birth control. My boyfriend and I had sex tonight and we didnt use anything, but i did take my pill today. How long does Amoxicillin stay in your system? How drastically can it affect your birth control? Do you think I am safe or am I at a huge risk of getting pregnant? Thanks!

You can call your pharmicist about it. I was recently put on amox and was told by my pharmicist that I should use a back-up while on it. When I asked her how long I should wait after finishing the amox, she said about 3 days. I am on 875 MG, every 12 hours for 10 days and I am on Yasmin. Can you get pregnant from this effect? Yes. A close friend of mine and her husband ended up with thier second child because she was taking amox. I hope that helped. That's just my experience with it- I HIGHLY recommend you ask your doctor/pharmicist. :)

Amoxicillan basically makes birth control NOT work. You can take birth control but it is basically not effective. So using a condom would be a good idea. So yea there is a chance you could get pregnant. From what I have been told my by Dr tho, the antibiotics only cause birth control to not be effective during the time you are on the antibiotics.

Just Wondering

I became pregnant with my daughter when i was taking antibiotics. I continued to take my birth control pills for 3 months untill i found out that i was pregnant. We did not use any backup method of birth control and i still had my monthly cycle for 3 months! Good luck!
