What do we mean When we 'GIVE' something a name?

emphasis on the give ? what does the giving do? what does it mean if we GIVE something a name?? I mean what do we do do we just give them a name on a piece of paper? what is done? Does the name represent them? Is the name essentially the person. Say when we say this is a circle (we point at a circle) , is the word circle the actual circle ? This concept is confusing anyone help?
