Is my usage of the colon in this sentence accurate?

Is this a proper use of the semi- colon?

  • Ok, so i'm in the middle of this debate with a few friends, the sentence is "Jeff has never "become a fan" of anything on facebook EVER; life achievement #54" and I would like to know if that semi-colon is used correctly. I claimed it was, but the other guy claims i'm an idiot. Literally if there is the slightest loop-hole in American grammar that would deem it an appropriate usage, I want to know! Thanks.

  • Answer:

Well, if you want the two sentances to be joined, then yes, but i wouldnt put it there...

A semicolon is used to bring together two independant clauses that are not linked with a conjunction. In simpler terms, two seperate ideas not linked with "and", "or", "but" etc. So, yes, you have used it correctly.
