Scientists from the Universities of Glasgow and Newcastle asked parents whether they thought their kids (six and seven year olds) met their daily exercise goals and got optimistic answers – with 83% of boys and 56% of girls reported to be meeting the 60-minute guideline – when actual results, using an accelerometer, showed that only 3% of boys and 2% of girls actually met the guideline! So, how can we ensure that our children get the requisite amount of exercise every day? Understand why exercise is important for children Did you know that it is reported that in 2008, one out of every three children was considered obese. This data was troubling as it also found that 80% of children who are obese at age 10-15 years continue on to become obese adults. The past 10 years in Canada , the number of obese six year olds has doubled while the number of obese 15 year olds has tripled. Obesity can lead to a host of other problems like diabetes and coronary disease. Besides combating obesity, exercise also has a host of other advantages for children – like boosting their immune systems, increasing stamina, managing stress and anxiety, better self-esteem and helping them to sleep soundly, as well as concentrate better among others. Incorporate exercise in your children’s routines For children who are 2 to 3 years old, 90 minutes of exercise time is ideal – let them run around, play tag or leapfrog. A trip to the park is a great way of getting in enough exercise for the day. For children between 4 and 5 years old, 60 minutes of exercise is a guideline but up to 90 minutes can be beneficial. They can get enough exercise by playing tag, throwing around and catching a ball, swimming, riding a bike or any sports center activity. Between 6 and 12 is when children really lay the foundation for their active lifestyle in the future so these children should be encouraged to develop a fitness routine with a sports team, as well as activities around the house or new concepts like yoga, or a kid’s gym. Now that you know how much and what kind of exercise your children need, here are some other generic tips to ensure that your children get enough exercise every day. ◦Reduce media-related sedentary activities – you can do this by setting a limit on how much time your children can watch TV, or play computer or video games. ◦Exercise with your child – your child looks up to you, so practice what you preach. Let them see you lead an active lifestyle and also involve them and exercise as a family whenever possible. ◦Make it fun or new – a game of Frisbee, occasionally, or washing the family car together. ◦Establish a regular schedule for physical activity. ◦Incorporate physical activity into daily routine – taking the stairs instead of the elevator and walking to the grocery store.
