Grammar question; What kind/kinds of disasters happen in your country?

  • Hello, I'm confused about when to say "what kind" and "what kinds". For example, which should I use in the following sentences? 1. What kind/kinds of disasters are common in your country? 2. What kind/kinds of man do you like? 3. What kind/kinds of men do you like? 4. What kind/kinds of food do you like?

Everything has to agree in number---the subject (kind/s), the verb, and the object of "of". Take the first one: What kind/kinds of disasters are common in your country? "Disasters" is plural, so it's "kinds". Same goes for "kind of man" and "kinds of men". The last one is tricky. "Food" can be a mass noun, that is, one that has no plural form, and we get no clue from "do". The way I hear it, "What kind of food do you like?" will likely be answered by "Mexican, Chinese, etc.", and "What kinds of food do you like?" will likely be answered by "pizza, ice cream, steak, etc." I would say, though, that that is a very weak distinction. "What kinds of foods do you like?" is possible, but unlikely.
