Why do I count words and objects all of the time?
-
I've been doing this since I was about 7 and in mid-twenties now. I mainly feel letters and objects need a "mate" so that's the reasoning behind it. For instance, if someone speaks I count the letters of the words they're speaking - not all of them, but if I lose focus of what they're saying I'll start to drift off in words they say. I also count punctuation in the sentence and include that into the total. I know this sounds crazy. I was talking to this guy I went on a date with the other day who I really like and we were mentioning little quirks and I mentioned this. He thought it was interesting and didn't seem freaked out by it, at least I hope. I kept this a secret until about 5 years ago, I was that embarrassed about it. Does anyone else do this??

I'm not a psychologist, but it sounds like an example of obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). As for why you do this, who knows? Maybe a combination of psychological and biological factors... I don't think that you are crazy, but If it interferes with your life you might want to get some help. I hear that it is treatable with behavior therapies.

That's pretty awesome, being a person who rarely counts anything or pays attention

No, the rest of us just listen to what they are saying because we actually might want to say something in reply.
