What would be a good company to do this paper on?

• Each student will individually prepare a financial analysis of a selected publicly traded company. Every student will select a different company, subject to instructor approval. The selection is on a first-come-first-serve basis, so notify me of your choice as soon as possible, before the due date (see schedule at the back of the syllabus). It is not recommended that you selected a company that is a bank, insurance company or other financial services company, nor a company that is going through, or has recently gone through financial distress or merger. The paper should address four areas: o Company Description. This section should provide a short overview of the company and a description of how this particular company generates cash and provides growth opportunities (highlighting divisional performance, if applicable). Students should also include a historical look at the stock price for this company, looking at the last 3-5 years of performance. o Industry Overview. This section should include the key financial issues for the industry, and provide a framework of how their target company compares to other major companies in terms of market share, etc. o Financial Statement Analysis. This analysis should include percent change and common size statements and financial ratio analysis; in addition to calculations, students should evaluate the company’s performance relative to a peer/competitor company, explain the cause of such performance, where possible, and use this analysis to identify any problems to solve or opportunities to exploit. Data should be analyzed for at least 3 years (most recent 10K); 5 years is recommended. o Outlook. Students should conclude the paper with an overall analysis of how the company has preformed to date, and what is expected for the future (and what the company needs to do in order to achieve this expected level of shareholder value).
