How long do you have to go to college to be a receptionist?

Secretaries, Receptionist, Administratives, What did you go to college for?

  • Answer:

Most today are using the "secretary, receptionist, administrative assistant" role as a stepping stone into the firm; i.e., to become a Project Manager, Scientist, Engineer, Account Executive, etc. In the "olden days" the stepping stone effect was accomplished by young men in the mail room. Today it's any sex, the admin office, and the sky's the limit. After one year you will know if you can/will rise or not. If not, move on. First, choose the field you want to enter. Next, determine the education necessary. For some, a bachelor's is not the answer; instead, an Associates degree or certificate program (paralegal, etc.) may be all you need. What did I go to college for ? To study Humanities. Many years ago, administrative assistant took care of my rent while I wrote novels. Today, it's a new world for the "secretaries" and the change is for the better.

I have a B.S. in Business. I also have an MBA. What do you want to do? I would go broad but if you know what you want and are confident that you can find a job then specialize. Go for at least an associates. Skip certificates.
