How do i get into the event planning industry?
-
All my life I loved planning and gatherings. I'm 19 and spanish, my family will find any excuse to have a party. I started planning when i was 10 or earlier then that. I have 2 older sisters so when my oldest sister had her sweet 16 i couldn't stop planning for mine. I have a binder organized for my sweet 16, Prom, Graduation, and 18th birthday. i love planning parties it makes me happy knowing im preparing for someones special day having it be a birthday or a wedding. So i would really like to continue my work and make it into a career!

Answer:
One way to get started is to contact established event planners and see if they can use someone from time to time to help. Also, research organizations for event planners (I've linked a site with some resources below) - you will be able to see the various types of environments they work in. Not only are there private event planners (like for weddings, anniversaries, reunions) but there are corporate planners, planners who work at hotels and resorts, planners who work for convention and visitors bureaus in major cities, and other opportunities. You should also go to the library and ask the librarian to help you find books on the topic. If you do your homework and prepare, when you contact someone to see if they need some help from time to time you will be able to speak their language and better understand what they are doing - that will make you more attractive as a potential employee even if it's on a temporary basis.

Sounds like you love to plan events! That's awesome. When you love what you do it isn't work. I would say make sure to read some event planning books for references. Second, is start telling all your friends and family you are starting your own event planning business. You will probably get quite a few bites for birthday parties or small events and as people see what you can do they will continue to gain more confidence in your abilities. Finally, think about working as an "apprentice" or "assistant" to an event planner. You can get more experience and build your portfolio of professional gigs. Good luck!
