One way to get started is to contact established event planners and see if they can use someone from time to time to help. Also, research organizations for event planners (I've linked a site with some resources below) - you will be able to see the various types of environments they work in. Not only are there private event planners (like for weddings, anniversaries, reunions) but there are corporate planners, planners who work at hotels and resorts, planners who work for convention and visitors bureaus in major cities, and other opportunities. You should also go to the library and ask the librarian to help you find books on the topic. If you do your homework and prepare, when you contact someone to see if they need some help from time to time you will be able to speak their language and better understand what they are doing - that will make you more attractive as a potential employee even if it's on a temporary basis.
