How do Unemployment extensions work?

• When replying to this question please keep in mind that the people interested in this question are going through possibly one of the most trying times of their lives. Most unemployed persons want a job, they want their savings back and do not want to live in fear in regards to how they will keep afloat without a job. With that being said I am looking for answers in this forum to as to how unemployment extensions work because it is difficult to reach state unemployment offices. When responding be sure to include the state you are referring to if applicable. Here are my questions: -Do I have to do anything special to move on to the extension tiers? -Is there lapse in benefits between regular 26 week benefits and extension tiers or do benefits keep coming as scheduled? What about between extension tiers? -I am receiving regular 26 week benefits now, my state says I will automatically receive a letter telling me if I qualify for extended benefits, why wouldn't I receive extended benefits if I am still unemployed? -In regards to the unemployment extension passed in Dec '10, is it different that the one passed previously? -Is there anything helpful you might add that I should know about unemployment extensions? -COBRA health insurance was too expensive, can anyone recommend a affordable health insurance provider?   Everything except the COBRA question must be answered by your state's unemployment department. Affordable health insurance? Hahaha. Private is more expensive and gives less coverage than the plan you have now.
