Can you give me tips on how I can avoid roaming charges?

Im gonna be traveling out of the US and im gonna be using my tmobile blackberry. I have the blackberry unlimited international email plan, so sending emails and BBMS is not a problem for me since I have the plan. So can you please give me ALL the tips on how I can avoid roaming charges like for example should I shut off data when roaming? Please give me other tips. Thank you so much 5 stars to best answer.

There are a number of ways to avoid roaming charges, Most modern smartphones have settings where you can turn off your roaming settings meaning that outside of your home country, only voice calls and text messaging can be used and any data that would normally be sent over the network would not then be sent. This would include internet browsing, apps (such as facebook and twitter) and also picture messaging. If you're concerned about this check with your phones instruction manual (the blackberry has strong settings so I believe this can be turned off). There are also services which enable you to save money on data roaming should you need to when abroad. Onavo - this changes your phone settings to use preferred networks and saves about 50% on your data roaming charges. www.iroaming.com - this application is only on the iPhone at the moment but is also to be released on Android and Blackberry. It claims to save around 90% on roaming charges for emails .
