How to obtain a basic EMT certification?

Is it worth get an EMT certification (NY)?

  • Hello: I live in Brooklyn, NY. I was wondering if get an EMT certification is worth it's cost. I am a college student with a lot of spare time. My questions are as follow: 1. For one to get their EMT certification one must pay the certification fee (obviously). The price (according to http://www.emergencycareny.com) is roughly $1000. Would I earn my $1000, plus more within one month of work as an EMT? 2. Is it worth it for a college student? Are there more certifications available that would "promise" an adequate pay? 3. How much would a beginner (no one with actual work experience, just the certification) be making? *Someone with EMT background would be great! Any other information contributed to this post is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I used to live in Brooklyn! But I was not an EMT at the time. I'm currently an EMT in the state of California. 1) You certainly could. EMTs in New York are among the highest paid in the country (alongside EMTs in California, North Carolina, and Texas). 2) Sure, it is worth it. Once you have completed the first level of training, you can continue on to become an EMT-I (Intermediate EMT), where you will receive higher wages. Then, you can pursue additional training to become a paramedic, where you will also be paid more. 3) A basic level EMT in New York will earn roughly $36,000 per year. I've provided a link in the resource box that will list all the requirements one must meet in order to become an EMT in New York. Should help you out! Good luck :)
