Which is the best way to send money from US to India?

My mom is leaving US to India and I wish to give her a couple of grand. Which is the best and safest way to send money from US to India? Is cashier's check same as demand draft of India? Do we have Account Payee check's counterpart in US? Or can I write a standard US check with her name, bank name and bank account # to ensure it doesn't get encashed by someone else in case she looses the check during transit? I don't want to use wire transfer because my mom can take the financial instrument with her during her journey. Please advise!
