Can I bid lower than starting bids on ebay?

Buying an ended ebay item that I didnt bid on?

  • So I had been watching an item on ebay. It recieved no bids but i had forgotten to bid also, I saw the seller was near me (barely 20 minutes away) and messaged them. I asked to purchase the item for less than the starting bid and offered to pick them up, sort of like a craigslist thing. He responded with saying, I'll accept the lower price offer and ship them free of cost. Sounds like a great deal but im worried. How do I get payment to him without being completely without power in the situation. If I pay him through paypal email and contact information, will I be protected as a buyer still? What should I do ???

  • Answer:

You have no buyer protection unless you go through Ebay and you cant do that if the item has ended unless buyer relists item. Wait until you see him and pay in person after you see the item.

No, you will not be protected as an eBay buyer, since the auction has ended. But, check his feedback and see how he has done, and for how long he has done whatever it shows. If he is quite positive, do not fret. If not, consider walking.

pick up only unless the seller has a very high feedback rating. you cant use ebay and Paypal will NOT protect you adequately.

It's called "shill bidding" and it certainly goes on more than anyone thinks. Look at the bid history of some of the big ticket items, like Rolex watches. Notice how many bidders have bid on items without ever buying anything, I find it hard to believe people bid up to a hundred times on watches they never buy since they have (0) feedback. Sometimes the bidders have bought cheap items like socks or something in their history but still have a less than (10) feedback rating mostly bidding on Rolex watches.
