How i would patent an idea at age 14?
-
i have an idea to patent a type of book cover (i won't say the idea because i don't want anyone stealing it..lol). but i'm not sure where to go to. my teacher saw my book cover that i created, and he said i should patent it. i'm not sure if he was kidding though, lol. any ideas where to start? thanks..:) *oh, and a lot of kids (and teachers!) told me that they thought my book cover was cool. so it's not like it's a terrible idea..haha.

Answer:
The patent application process is the same no matter who you are or how old you are. This non-profit web page has a ton of info on inventing and patenting. http://sbdcnet.org/SBIC/copyright.php It is part of the Small Business Development Center's website. They have locations all over the country, and they are free. They can do a free patent search for you and help with the process, free. Use the link in the left column to find an office near you. You can just call and talk to someone there for free, too. http://sbdcnet.org/SBIC/copyright.php It will cost money to patent your invention, but you may be able to get a grant or other funds for that. To patent something, you need to file with the Patent and Trademark Office. As a practical matter, you'll need a specialist to help prepare the paperwork. This can be a lawyer, but there are plenty of others that are skilled at this and charge a fraction of what a lawyer will. You could try to file on your own, but it's not a simple process. You don't simply send a copy of your book cover to the PTO and, presto, you have a patent. There is a very particular way to write-up you "claims" and document things. There is also a need to perform some basic research to determine if anyone else has something like this. For kids, the PTO occasionally does hold a special "contest" where you can send in your ideas. You can try www.pto.gov to see when the next such event is and how you can enter. Unfortunately, the patent process is one that's setup to reward those that have money enough and not simply those with good ideas.
