hi one of my client owed me 1000$...he sent me two checks $500 each.....out of that, one of the check is post dated, and he forgot to inform me that... i went ahead and deposited both the checks in my checking account........and the $1000 showed up in my account next day and i was even able to transfer that money out of my account for some other purpose... but now my friends says that, at the time when i deposited his checks, he had only $600 in his account, and not sure how my bank was able to process both the checks.........but he can see there were some non sufficient funds charged in his account....... so, i was wondering, how come my bank was able to process both the checks, when he had only 600$ in his checking account help me clarify on this...... mine is chase bank account, and his was bank of america acct...both were checking accts.

Answer:
The second cheque didn't process, and your bank will reverse the deposit and return the cheque to you. It takes a couple weeks.

If the teller at your bank had noticed the date of the check, you would not have been able to deposit that check. But, since it was not noticed, on the day you made your deposit, your bank did not know that your friend did not have sufficient funds in his bank. Banks computers are not linked to other banks. Your bank will not know the check has bounced until several days have passed. Once your bank receives notification of the insufficient funds, they will take back the $500 from your account and you will be notified that they have done so. They will probably send you the bounced check along with the explanation letter. When this happens, if you do not have enough funds in your account to cover this, you will also go into a delinquency and could have some bounced checks of your own. For now, your best course of action is to make sure that your account has an extra $500 in it.
