How can i update my xbox 360?

i have an xbox 360. i just hooked it up to the internet and it said i needed an update, fine by me! so i updated it and it restarted etc. then it said i don't "have enough memory for advanced features." i thought this was ok, then went i went into gears of war and tried to enter an xbox live match, it told me that i still needed to update!? it then said i either need a 128mb memory card, or a cardrive to complete the update. then i had another thought, since it is not fully updated i can "restart" the update using a usb flashdisk, i learned that method from here: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/systemuse/xbox360/console/systemupdates.htm but when i re-started my system with the flashdisk inserted, NOTHING happened!? the first part of my question is how in the world can i "complete" my update. and second of all i have a TON of 4gb usb flash drives lying around my house (don't ask how i got them lol) and i don't really care what becomes of them, is there anyway, i can convert them for use with the 360 as a memory for saved games, custom maps, UPDATES! etc.? thanks, and sorry for the length!

Do you have a hard drive on your box? If so maybe you need to clear up some space. go to My Xbox then scroll over to system settings then got to memory then from there clear some space. If you don't have a hard drive then I urge that you do get one so you can complete your update.
