How do I install the minecraft Texture pack?

Minecraft Texture Pack Help?

• I recently downloaded two texture packs in minecraft, and wished to meld the smooth stone texture from the 'faithful' texture pack, into the sphax pure texture pack. However, when i'd finished editing the 'terrain.png' and rebooted minecraft, something strange happened. The smooth stone carried over perfectly, which was a good start, however, all the torches became 2D, with flat white boxes intersecting in the middle, and all glass texture turned solid white for some reason. Does anyone have any advice as to why this happens, or how to fix it? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
