  I don't know if there's any software for doing it, but many people just make their own patterns by figuring out how to break the image down into shapes, create straight-sided pieces to create them, and how to put them together so that each piece can overlap an entire previous section when sewn (and/or the fewest number of pieced-parts they'll have to make to join together into one block). Sometimes that's fairly easy, especially if you look at similar ones then just tweak them. Sometimes it's a really challenging puzzle.
