Help with Crochet Terminology?
-
I am a beginner trying to understand the basics when it comes to crochet. So from my interpretation so far: A single crochet helps increase in length, for example when making an arm it keeps the current size, yet increases how long the arm will be. A double crochet (or making two single crochet in the same stitch) increases the size, for example when making a head, it will create the robustness or width of the head. But what does a single crochet in one stitch, then a double crochet in the next stitch do? Or it could be written like "SC then INC" Does this increase in width yet slowly decrease at the same time? Which starts to create that "bowl" shape? And also what does two single crochet, then a double stitch do? It can also be written like "2 SC then INC" So then does this one quickly decrease yet partially increase at the same time? Further creating the bowl shape or is this the process that starts the official decrease when you want to start closing up the bowl? Thanks for your help, I hope I'm not too confusing.

You mention arm, so are you trying to make a particular thing or just trying to get general information? Stitches vary in height from slip stitch all the way up ... single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, triple crochet etc... There are hundreds of stitches but those are your basics. Each stitch adds a little to the height. Whether that is width or length depends on what you are making and in which direction you are working. If you are making a vertical scarf, for example, you will chain a certain number and that will remain the width until you reach the end. The length will increase with each row. The stitch being used doesn't matter. You will increase slowly in single crochet or quickly in triple. To get a bowl shape, you might begin by working in the round. You will increase each round by the same number you start with. For example, if you work 12 stitches in your ring on your first round, you will increase by 12 each round. When you STOP increasing, then you will start to develop sides, like the sides of a bowl or a hat. The process of increasing a stitch, whether in rows or whatever, can be done two ways. One is by simply working two stitches in one stitch. The other is by adding chains and then working into the chains as well as the already completed work. I realize all the terminology and the ins and outs are difficult to explain in one short note. If you want to start from the beginning, I have recently completed two video series on crochet basics. You can see them at my YouTube channel or on my web site. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc7xi2E9new http://www.youtube.com/user/CrochetCabana My channel http://www.crochetcabana.com/tutorials/videos.htm videos on my web site Hope that is some help.

You are pretty confusing -- because you are confused! I'll try to tackle these in order. Whatever the stitch, single crochet or double crochet or whatever, you increase the length of your piece by working additional rows. To increase the width, you add stitches by increasing. The double crochet stitch is taller than single crochet, but not wider. So you do not increase the size of a head by changing to double crochet. You have to add stitches. A single crochet, followed by a double crochet, is merely a pattern stitch. It has noting do do with adding stitches. To increase in single crochet, you work 2 stitches into the top of one stitch. The same for double crochet. You need far more help than I can give here. The Craft Yarn Council has some excellent information that should help you. Visit: www.learntocrochet.com And you might want to buy a good basic how to crochet book. I see nothing in your questions that refers to decreasing, so don't know what you mean by "quickly decrease yet partially increase at the same time".

I mean this kindly but you have to start over from scratch. This link may help: http://www.crochetpatterncentral.com/directory/instruction_directory.php Start with Chain Stitch Guide. or Learning to Crochet I've often thought that it must be difficult to learn if you have never seen it being done. My mother taught me the basics when I was very young. Most craft shops will have classes, churches will often have a group who makes baby items or scarves and hats for the homeless or for charity. That might be a free place to get some one on one help. It may seem hopeless but once you master the single crochet, double and triple crochet, the rest is easy. So take your time, have patience and remember, it rips out real easy for do-overs! LOL.
