How to deal with Restless Leg Syndrome?

How to cure restless leg syndrome?

  • I have not been officially or professionally diagnosed with RLS, but based on everything I am reading, my symptoms are consistent with this malady. I have reviewed a few of the comments in this forum and have not found much in the way of a complete cure. Would appreciate one or two sound and sensible suggestions outside of prescription drugs, exercising myself into exhaustion or drowning myself with herbal teas. Thanks for your input; need the sleep.

  • Answer:

Eating foods high in Magnesium, (raisins, most fruits, nuts/seeds, leafy greens...) Potassium (bananas, pineapple, most fruits), and Calcium (dairy, leafy greens, figs..) will do wonders for leg cramps and muscle contraction issues. These minerals are more bioavailable (more efficiently absorbed) from food sources and these foods will provide you with a plethora of other micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to assist in the homeostasis (normal healthy functioning) of the body. Also, ensure that you are consuming more than 64ounces of water per day so the muscles and cells stay hydrated, which could also be one of the culprits in your leg pains/cramps. EDIT: And Lucy is right in avoiding caffeine and sugar. Both can interfere with absorption of certain vitamins and minerals, further perpetuating the problem!

I have RLS as well, and honestly the only useful advice that I find works is avoiding foods and drink with high levels of sugar and/or caffeine.

Magnesium and Iron help a lot. Especially magensium!

See a professional Homeopath. You're not going to get amateur advice that will fix the problem. In the meantime you might want to boost your Magnesium intake with supplements to "bowel tolerance" to see if that helps. Try having a hot Epsom Salts bath before bedtime too.
