What is it like being a Manager?

I feel that my manager doesn't like me.,what should I do?

  • Ok basically I work at a retail store, It's my first ever job and I'm inexperienced. It's only been four shifts at work and I made a few mistakes(they are not serious AT ALL). My manager seems like she thinks I'm stupid or something because I was asking help on my THIRD time on the register. At one point, she said "I don't like you because you keep asking questions" when I only asked her a questions twice. This morning before the store opened, me and another 3 coworkers had a small meeting with the manager and she talked through some of the things. Well, I was observing him all the way through but she didn't look at me AT ALL, not even a glance! She was just addressing the other three as if I didn't exist! Now that I think about it, every time he talked to a few of us, I was always left out of his sight range. She didn't make any rude remarks to me or something like that but it really hurt me that he treated me like i wasn't part of the group. Ok, i know that the other people can do their job fast and efficient cuz they been here like at least a year, I've only been here for four days but a few tiny mistakes really shouldn't be enough for her to think lightly about me. I really do think that as a newbie(this is my first job ever), I need his encouragement badly, if I make a mistake, I correct it, but if i do something right, it would really motivate me tremendously if she can give me at least a word of acknowledgment like 'it seems that you are getting on.' Every time I do something, she's like "No,why are you even doing that? Do something else." and she gave everyone else their fifteen at the same time and then gave me mines separately so I just sat by myself for fifteen minutes. Anyway, sorry for the complaint, i just wanna ask you guys if it is possible to turn things around. I like this job as well as the people here including the manager.

  • Answer:

This statement alone "I don't like you because you keep asking questions" would have me talking with her manager one on one within a week. That is RIDICULOUS, if you don't ask questions, and she doesn't tell you HOW to do it, you'll never learn. I would ask for a different trainer because "my current manager, while I"m sure must be frustrated and busy, doesn't seem like she can help me learn this ver well." Yelling at you when you do it wrong without telling you how to do it right is not going to help.

i think your reading way to much into this. and it's rather confusing with the he and she and I don't even know who is who. just do your job and cover your ars... Who cares if they don't look at you. Trust me you don't want to be on a bosses radar. blend in with the scenery and you should be fine! well that and you do your work to the best of your powers!

Well, I have an Idea, but it might be challenging. Take note of why the manager likes the others more than you. Mimic them, only do better. (don't make it look too obvious) This might require that you perform well in your position. for example, memorize the location of products, assist customers in the best way you know how, and put some heart in your job no matter what. It might take time, but if you prove that you can maintain a high performance and skill at your job, your manager should have no reason for not including you. meanwhile, try to be content and mind your business during the process.

hey i am a store manager in a video games store and a female. she probably realises (like i do) that retail is the kind of "career" you get stuck in and find it hard to get out and she probably gets angry from time to time and lets it off at the staff! especially newer ones. honestly, you're not doing anything wrong and don't worry, you'll pick it up and whatever you do, don't ever think about ti when you're not working. it's retail and it doesnt pay enough for you to take it home =)
