Bad sign from potential landlord, returning phone calls?
-
My husband and I put a deposit on an apartment. We told him the soonest we could move in is May 15, but it could be later. He agreed to hold it. I found out we actually can't move in until May 30 (2 weeks later than expected date). He didn't sound exactly thrilled and told me if we back out he's keeping the deposit. We aren't backing out at all, we are just locked under another lease longer than we anticipated. I was really unsettled with his response, so I called him back yesterday evening (he works nights) and left him a voice mail telling him we'd like to sign the lease as soon as possible. He never called me back. Would you read into that at all?

As he works nights, he may not get to answer you right away, but if he hasn't called by 10pm tonight, call him again.
Don't jump the gun, it has not even been 24 hours. Give him a chance to call you back.
I would give it a day or two & try again. You never know, he could have been busy. He may not have been able to return your call because he hasn't gotten your message yet. Look at this from his point of view instead of yours. You put up the deposit, yet you are delaying the rent. Because you are not able to move in when you first said you would. To him you may be bulking on the deal. He doesn't know you to trust you yet. To him, he could be gaining rent now, which is what he is in the business for... Renting out property.
I wouldn't read too much into it. Calm down. He is probably just worried because I am sure in his years as a landlord he has dealt with many a deadbeat.
