How to talk with strangers?
-
I am a 17 year old guy and I am going to the swearing in ceremony for my local state representitive that I work with. I have some friends that will be attending, but there will be 45 people on this trip, many of whom I have never met. Many are also adults. How can I start conversations with these people naturally? I have mild autism so I am sometimes oblivious to social clues when it comes to conversations. Since I will have to spend the entire day with this group of people, how can I talk with them and spark up a chat? Thanks for your help!

Answer:
I commend you for being willing to interact with other people. It does take mindful effort to develop coping mechanisms to deal with any kind of autism. My suggestion: Team up, one at a time, with various friends who are aware of your autism. Ask them to take the lead in starting conversations, and then join in the discussion yourself. You don't have to be the life of the party – in fact many people have gained reputations as good conversationalists mostly by listening in an interested way. If you have difficulty looking other people in the eyes, don't fret too much about it. Just glance at their foreheads once in a while. I hope this helps!

A simple "hi", "hello", or "how are you?" are always good ways to start a conversation. On this particular trip you can be pretty sure that the state representative will be the subject of many conversations. While it's important to participate in a conversation appropriately, do bear in mind that being a good listener is just as important. And with many people all you have to do is listen, nod your head in agreement occasionally, and just let them talk. Try to not let it stress you. Just have fun.
Don't worry about starting a conversation or sparking up a chat. There will be plenty of conversations going on all around you that you can join if you have something pertinent to say. If you say little but what you say is worth while they will come to you to find out more about who you are.
If you want to seem smart, listen to other peoples conversations. Pick up some of the peoples favorite stuff, then act interested, and sit up strait, smile, maintain eye contact, and never let your shyness show. If you spill something, heres a funny cover-up. "Sorry, I washed my hands today, and now I can't do anything with them!" try to stay interested, and remember, the more confident you act, the better impression you make. if you want to be mysterious, ask few questions, and listen, and usually appear to be deep in thought, and remember, people like to gossip! or talk about other people. "God! did you see what that man did!?" or make the exclamation feminine. that immediately makes the atmosphere lighter. light jokes help too. the secret is to not be stiff and formal. if you are, others will feel the same around you, cutting off the natural flow of conversation. hope this helped =-)
