What is the biggest mistake customers make?

Don't you feel terrible at work when you make a mistake in front of the customer and they laught at you?

  • Today at work while I was ringing up this lady, some guy came up to me and asked if I can give him change, he wanted to give me some one dollar bills in exchange for a 10 dollar bill so I said no problem. Out of nowhere the security guards at the store I work in come up and say we are no longer allowed to give change due to how people have been trying to trick cashiers with stuff like that lately. I said I was very sorry and I didn't know the rules had changed. Well this lady just listens to the conversation the security had with me and looks at me and laughs at me! Like in a really obvious way! And rolls her eyes at me as if I was a total idiot! It was very embarrassing! And she just wouldn't stop laughing! I hated it! How do you guys deal when customers laugh when you make a mistake in front of them?

whenever i make a mistake and someone laughs at me, i laugh along with it. when you think about it its no big deal. we all have had moments like this...i know as sure as hell i have!!! anyway, its nerve racking working at a cashiers desk, so you are not the only one. as for that lady? screw her! she has nothing else better to do

i'm sorry but i think you might be exaggerating slightly.... she wouldn't stop laughing?! you didn't make a mistake, you were not told that rule so how could you have made a mistake. you will however make a mistake in the future - we all do. when that happens if the person laughs -- so should you - i mean why not, don't take things THAT seriously that you can't laugh at your own mistakes. All you can do is learn from them an move on.. for example, i learned never to say i have question, it will probably sound stupid but, i'm ignorant as to the facts of ABC can you tell me. yeah did that once to an orthodox rabbi and boy did i screw up -- he didn't know the answer either so i just insulted HIM at the same time - calling him ignorant because he didn't know the answer to a question within his own faith traditions! needless to say i lost that account AND stopped phrasing questions in such and similar manners. mistakes will happen and as long as there are no "bodies on the table" it's okay.

Wow... what a b****. Don't worry about yourself, she is rude, it's got nothing to do with you. Plain and simple. I might feel stupid if I know what I did was a mistake when it should be of common sense. It'll sit with me til 5pm for sure, but what happened to you, you should forget it like it never happened! How would I handle a customer like that? I wouldn't spend a second there with her if I can help it, that's how.

id tell them they were being rude but this hasnt happened to me

Learn to laugh at yourself, the security guard should have waited until you were alone. But, never help anyone if you're in the middle of ringing someone up, it's rude to everyone. Lots of confusion can happen that's why the guy bothered you in the middle of ringing someone. It's very hard working with the public, most are really jerks, (to put it nicely). I finally had to take a factory job so I didn't deal with the public. Learn to check the bulletin board in the break room, that's usually where new rules are posted. Your employer should have meetings to let everyone know of changes, especially if you're dealing with money. The security guard should have really ask the customer off to the side and explained to him/her that changing monies was no longer aloud. (the security guard really sounds like a jerk)
