How should I tell my drill team coach that I'm quitting drill team?
-
I'm a sophmore and this is my second year on drill team. Last year I was on pom squad, but the people were really mean so I switched to the other squad that does jazz and kick. It's better this year because the people are nicer, but my heart isn't in it. I still dread going to practice because I know I'll spend another 3 hours standing around while the seinors argue about a hand position or something stupid like that. Sometimes I don't feel like part of the team. There have been meetings and practices that I've missed because no one told me about them. No one even said ANYTHING to me about team pictures until like 30 min before and I had no way of getting there, so I'm not in the picture. The people aren't as mean, but I'm still not going to miss anyone if I leave. I actually have only one friend on drill team that I talk to outside of school, she's a freshman and we have a lot of the same other friends so it wouldn't be like I'm ditching her or anything. In fact, she always seems sad at drill team so I think she might not like it either and would probably understand if I quit.. The one I'm worried about though is my coach. I'm afraid to tell her that I'm quitting to her face because she would probably yell at me or try and talk me out of it and make me feel bad. I think I want to email her to tell her, but I don't know what to say. What should I say to her? Should I say that I feel like I'm not part of the team in the first place, or that my heart just isn't in it anymore and I can't commit to it?

Answer:
Keep in mind that you will have to tell her somehow and that you can't control her reaction. You can only control how YOU respond. Be honest with her. Explain what is happening and focus on the concrete facts. You could do it via email or in person. Have you considered calling her? By the way.....have you told your parents about this at all?

My daughter was on drill team in high school. I know what you're going through. The girls can be difficult and cliquey unless the coach in on top of things and doesn't allow it. I think it's rare to find a good coach because they were probably on the squads in high school and were the same type of girls. I also remember that drill team was pretty much over after football season except for a couple of holiday events. If that's true for your team could you stick it out until then and just not try out for next season? If not, you just need to tell the coach. I know it will be hard, but it would be more mature to do it face to face. As you get older you will need to face difficult people with difficult conversations. This will be good practice for your future. Be truthful with her and let her know that you don't feel a part of the team. Tell her about the picture situation. Tell her your heart's not in it and you've talked with your mom and she supports your decision. Good Luck!

I would talk to her in her office. The problem is your drill team coach. She is not communicating with the students very well. She should encourage all of you to get along. But instead, she overlooks the catty remarks and catty personalities. To where good girls like you, don't want to be part of the team. I think that is sad. But you know change is always good. You can always join other high school clubs. That will make you feel a part of something. Good luck

I quit a select choir in high school because the teacher was constantly on me about smoking, and I didn't smoke! She got pretty nasty, saying how I wasn't all that good a singer but I was letting the others down. I made up a story that I couldn't get to school early enough to practice before classes, and I wish I'd told her that it upset me that she was accusing me of something that I wasn't doing. It may seem easier now to email her or make up a story but you'll feel better about in the future if you just honestly tell her why you don't want to do this anymore.
