i think its more about what you feel confortable with, of course there is the side that is providing food and drinks, but good times are about so much more, its about the people you are with and the wuility of conversation, you as hostess should move around, making sure during the event you talk to everyone briefly and you introduce your guests to each other (if they dont allready know the others) and in doing so make sure eveyone else there has someone they can talk to. on the food side of things be aware of any allergies of your guests and make sure you have somehting that eveyone can eat, and let those people know which dishes are safe for them, and possibly ask that others dont eat that if they dont need it explaingin its for ditery requirments, but this is really on etiquite when you have made 2 versions of the same dish, for example a cheese free toss salad and one with cheese in it.

Start by reading a book or 2 on etiquette. Look for a hospitality course or program at a local college or some other entity. (Locally, our school & park systems offer non-credit courses in such things.) Keep looking for books & articles, surely someone has written about it.

Martha Stewart must have written a few books by now.
