Why doesn't my PHP function work as expected?

Halp!! Touble at work.........?

  • I am a 19 yo college student an i work at a daycare centre for the summer months. I am confused about somethings an really need some good advice. The thing is, about 6 months ago I was diagnosed with a severe sleep disorder that leaves me severely sleep deprived an unable to function normally. I had to drop all my courses at school because of it. Now I am feeling much better an back to normal now that I am being medically treated for it an have been since febuary. THe thing is around the time i started my summer job in may, my dr put me on new, more effective meds. These meds caused constant nausia an sometimes even made it feel exactly like i had a bad stomach flu! In the first 5 weeks of work i called in sick 5 times because i was vomiting like every hour or two on those days!! I realized this was a huge problem an got my dr to switch me back to the non-vomit inducing meds. As of now, i have not had to call in sick at all since mid june. I have explained all of this to my manager who is ok with it an glad i am feeling better. She says that she is glad that i am here because I am a good employee and the kids love me. she says i shouldnt come when i am sick an infect the kids. I havent been sick lately, i make an effort to always interact positively with the children, I bring extra things from home for them such as home made sparkily playdough an home made rainbow bubbles, disney movies etc. It is important to me to be a good worker so i make sure that I do what i am told an ask if there is anything else I can do to help or if there is anything i need to be doing that i am not doing. My boss always says "no ure doing great!". It is not in my nature to be absent from work or other responsibilities (i got the attendance awward in highschool - i know dorky right?). Also we are always overstaffed by one or two ppl so those 5 times i called in sick didnt seem to have a big impact on what my boss thinks of me luckily. THe trouble is, recently my boss went on vacay an now we are only one person over staffed. Recently a co-worker said to me that i need to "suck it up an stop being sick cause im really screwing them over an i cant be sick when carrie is gone on vacay"...I havent been sick for like 6 weeks so i dont know where that came from. the girl who said that to me isnt a boss or supervisor or anything but i can only assume that the message came directly form carrie, my boss who is on vacay. I was not aware that i was 'screwing them over'. So now i am very concerned that this is a problem. Also i notice that all the employees talk behind eachothers back about how they think so an so is doing a terrible job doing such an such which makes me wonder what they are saying about me when im not there. I wish that if i were doing something wrong that my boss carrie would tell me so that i can fix it instead of having ppl whisper behind my back!!! I am eager to do well in my summer job an realize that as a summer student i am there to help an if my workmanship needs improving i am more than willing to do so. Should i talk to my boss carrie? its a pretty small but hectic place and she doesnt have an office for me to talk to her privately. Could i give her a letter explaining my situation? I want to know if there is anything i should be doing beter in my job because even thouht i try my best everyday i wantto make sure i do what is expected of me. I thought i was already 'sucking it up' by only calling in sick when i am violently puking everywhere?! My boss comes to work when she is violently puking so maybe thats what is expected?

Welcome to the work force...backbiting and whispers abound. It happens everywhere - don't let it get to you too much. You can't stop the whispering, really. Just ask your boss if there is any way you can improve your performance. Something along the lines of, "I really want to do my best here. Can you give me some tips on what I can do to improve in my job?" That way you show interest, you don't mention the harpies that seem to exist at every job, and you are satisfying what is really bothering you, are you doing ok at your job or not? What a non-management employee says is most often not an indication of what management sees or says. Side note: OMG Lulu, WTF is wrong with you? I hope someone answers your questions in such a despicable manner and berates you for asking a question! Really, really lamo. (BTW, I am going 2 to go answer your questions with as much improper grammar and abbrieviations just to piss you off!)

People do that all the time in jobs. They always have to have something to gripe about. I'm not so sure that Carrie is saying stuff about you to others or if your co-workers are just upset that you have taken off so much. They may feel that you are making excuses and not being serious. I know you are serious but again, they need something to gripe about. Don't worry about you co-workers, they're not your boss so they need to get over themselves. Just keep doing what you have been doing and if you get sick again, then they are the ones who need to suck it up. Your co-workers can't fire you so if you boss says that there is no problem and that you are doing fine, then you have nothing to worry about.

First of all, I also have a medical condition that required me to drop some classes and interferred with my job so I know how you feel. People will never fully understand how often a person can be sick especially when they haven't found the correct medications for themselves yet. Going on, your boss has told you you're a good employee. If you were not, then your boss would have fired you a long time ago, specifically when you had so many absences. This woman you work with sounds bitter and for no reason at all, taking out her anger on you. No boss would ever complain to one employee about another, that would be risking their credibility and possibly their job as well. Keep doing what you're doing and don't worry about that woman. If you approach your boss about this then he/she might think you're causing trouble. Next time this woman says anything like that to you tell her: " I don't know what your problem is with me but I do have a medical condition, one in which the boss is aware of. If you have a problem with my absense then you can speak the boss about it but speaking to me in that manner is not going to solve anything."
