How can I get people to take me seriously?

Stop showing others your irritated by it. Take two siblings. Say for example the older one will take one hand and flick the younger one's ear over and over. In reaction to this the younger sibling will most likely pitch a fit, yell, cry, plead and possibly tattle on the older sibling. This may get get the older sibling to stop for that one instance but when the next day comes around this routine starts all over again. People will usually get bored over time when the person they make fun of no longer react the way they expect.

The long answer: If someone doesn't automatically treat you decently because you're a human being, chances are you don't want that person's respect anyway. If someone disrespects you merely because you're short, that someone is an @sshole, plain and simple. Why would you want their respect in the first place? Besides, I know the @ssholes you're talking about. I was in the military and I was a nerd. The people who disrespect nerds and short people have a very f'ed-up morality. They only "respect" someone for their hostility, aggression, ability to cause harm, and authority of rank (they respect people of high rank only because such people have power and can get someone in lots of trouble) To an @sshole, the word "respect" and "fear" are interchangable, so when they say they say they respect someone, what they really mean is they fear them, and that means they don't understand the true meaning of the word "respect" at all . So why would you even care about such a person's opinion of you? The opinions of idiots and @ssholes will not bother you at all if you see them as monkeys throwing verbal poop at you. Would you get insulted if a monkey in a zoo threw its own crap at you? Probably not because... it's just a stupid monkey! And if someone ridicules you in public, tell them to knock it off or you will file harassment charges, which you totally should. They'll likely accuse you of being a "whiny b*tch", which means they are irritated that you don't want to play their schit-flinging games. Unfortunately, polite language does not work with such people... so you have to threaten them with legal action.
