What is the proper email etiquette to reply to a person?

Email etiquette --- addressing a person with both First and Last Names?

  • Would it considered rude to send a response or a follow up email to a client/business partner (an external party) with both the recipient's first and last name? Take for example: From: Tim Tim To: Sue Smith Subject: Re: abcdefg issue Sue Smith, I have received a letter from Dr. Fat Turkey and need to know .... Thanks.

  • Answer:

Yes. Either address them as Sue (if you know them reasonably well - which in business these days means met once) or Ms Smith. (You might use Mrs Smith if you know for certain that she has exchanged her father's name for her husband's) Using both names looks suspiciously like it was generated by a mail merge programme.

You call people by their first names when you are close to them, and you call them by last name when you are not. Using Mr, Miss, Mrs, are a sign of respect. And the basics of manners ARE respect. I hope that helps, and have a wonderful day!

I don't like it. Call her Ms. Smith. It sounds less like a form letter. I get letters Dear Re And throw them in the trash.
