What's the correct way of doing hand-over-hand steering?

  • I'm just starting to learn how to drive and I really want to get everything down correctly. I looked up the hand-over-hand method but my sources say different things. Some say the hands should be at 9 and 3, others say 10 and 2. Some say you should do hand-over-hand to revert the wheel while others say just let it slide. Can anyone give me a simple, clear, yet detailed explanation for the correct hand-over-hand method?

    The 9 and 3 AND the 8 and 4 are for cars with airbags. My company's safe driving trainer mentioned this to us in training because at 10 and 2, if the airbag goes off then it will likely break both arms. I also agree with the previous poster that said that the hand over hand to revert was for cars without power steering but I also wanted to give you the information as to why some sources say 10 and 2 and others say 9 and 3.
