How to get an extremely quiet guy to talk to me?

  • I mean he rarely talks ever. He sits with my group of friends in the college cafeteria (although half the time, one of us has to go find him and bring him over because he's sitting by himself, again) and hardly makes a peep. The few things that do come out of his mouth tend to be extremely funny. I get the impression that he's very intelligent. But it drives me crazy how mysterious he is. I haven't got a clue as to what he might be thinking at any moment. Last night I ended up sitting by him. (This was engineered by a friend who knows I like him. Bless her heart.) Not only am I bad at coming up with things to talk about, it's doubly hard to do when he just doesn't talk. I don't know what to say to him. Last night I sprinkled salt on the table and drew a face in it, and he took torn-up napkins and gave it hair, all without saying a word. Last weekend we played ping-pong for two hours and we didn't say a word. It's pretty funny actually, but I want to know if he's interested or not, and I've got no idea how to get him to talk to me. I'm thinking of just saying one day "If someone wanted to get you to talk, how should they go about it?" but I don't know how that would come across. Ideas?

lol reminds me of myself several years ago. And in all modesty i am pretty inteligent. Normally the reason why guys that are smart don't talk is because they over think everything. And either feel awkward and aren't sure how to respond without losing social status, or take so long to think that by the time they don't think of something funny they feel the moment is gone. So try engaging him. And be super direct. Ask him why he never talks and ask it with a smile like as it seems you do you don't hate that quality about him. If he doesn't respond or seems to feel even more awkward still smiling start asking him about himself. Everyone no matter how shy in my opinion likes to talk about themselves. Ask him what he likes. Start with something really simple like what his favorite class is, or what his favorite movie is something like that
