My First Interview!?

What are your thoughts of a thank you letter after the first interview?

  • If you're in a two step interview process in which the interviewer of the first screening interview tells you that you are being recommended for the second interview with the department head, and they call you the next morning to set up an interview is it appropriate to send the first interviewer a thank you letter, or is it more appropriate to wait until after the second interview?

  • Answer:

I usually hate hearing this kind of answer but here it is: It can't hurt. Depending on the type of job, no one will fault you on being extra cordial. It might make you stand out from all those that file through the interviews making no personal impact on the interviewer. Everyone likes a courteous person. Timing is important though. They called you the next day? Was your thank you going to be a email letter? Send it! And even if you do not get past the second interviewer, send that one a thank you anyway, for the opportunity - it's a class move, and just might keep you in their mind if something similar pops up, or, more importantly, if the one they did hire turns out to be a bad fit..

WRITE IT!!! Now! Don't waste any more time. It makes such a good impression for a candidate when they write a thank you note/letter after the interview. We employ people and are always shocked at how many candidates do NOT write thank you notes. We really notice the ones who do. So! Write it and get it out straight away. Best wishes for your new position!!

Before retirement I had a job which involved interviewing candidates for jobs. I never expected or wanted a thank you letter after an interview. You thank people for doingsomethingg for you. I felt that they did me a favour by applying for the job and thanked them for attending the interview. They did not have to thank me for interviewing them because they were there for my benefit to chose the best applicant.
