What are coupons?

What is you're guys take on using coupons when out shopping?

  • And about how much does it help save? Would it be weird for a male in his mid 20's to use coupons on such things as groceries and household items? And overall if it's something they want or need and have a coupon for the item use it. I'm learning how to save money and want to get into the habit of maxamizing the amount I have. I live on SSI right now, going to school, and working on learning to save while getting a car and working on saving so I'll have a nest egg started when I hope to get off of SSI after i graduate from my program and get my first job. I want to get in the habit of maximizing what I can get with what I have, by using coupons even though I get foodstamps, just want to get into the habit while still learning how to handle my own money. So how is it like using coupons? How much does it help?

  • Answer:

Coupons are all over the place, so are sales. My guy wanted a table for the house and I found a coupon at Staples for 20% off that was 20 dollars he saved not ten cents it was a darn good coupon. You can join stores that have coupons online that just attach to their card like Safeway. Go Safeway.com you pick the coupons you are going to use and they load it on your Safeway card so you dont' have to cut out the coupons the savings happens at the checkout and nobody knows you are using the coupons but the clerk who rang your order .. cool huh? saves you from losing the darn things too!

If you have the time and patience to use coupons, go for it! Otherwise, it's like throwing money away and it adds up quickly. For example, we started putting our change into a jar then counted it at the end of the year. We had several hundred dollars and were able to take a fun trip.

Although I am not aware of the food coupons you are referring to I do know many people take advantage of specials as they arise. Checking out, say the supermarket specials in your junk mail, and buying in bulk can be ways of saving a few dollars. It negates the effect if people find that they are travelling excessively just to save a few dollars on an item when they are wasting petrol and time in the process. Yes, some people only buy specials and end up shopping in 3 different supermarkets. Hardly a way to save a few dollars. Minimise the amount of trips you actually make. Buying a product in bulk only works if you actually use the product and it is indeed a good quality product. 2 for 1 offers similarly can save a few dollars, but again only if it is a brand you actually want. Beware of products that appear to offer discounted prices for bulk purchases also. I have seen individual items being sold for cheaper at times. Knowing the usual prices of the items you prefer in advance so you are aware of product mark ups happening is the best way of being prepared to shop wisely.
