What should I do now to be a web designer?

What qualifies you as a "professional" web designer?

  • Im a 23 yr old college senior. My major is professional writing and editing with a concentration in web communications and info technology. Right now I am the web site coordinator for the humane society (which is a paid position) and I have done a little bit of web work for the college I attend. I have a paying client who is paying me to design their web site ... it is going to consist of about 24 pages, including designing their layout from scratch and implemeting a membership database. I understand when you start out in this kind of thing, you have to work for cheap or free. They are paying me $15/hr. The reason I am irritated is because they are putting a huge emphasis on the title "professional". I have been paid to do web work before, my current job title is web site coordinator, and now I am doing freelance work for this company. But they keep saying things like "if you were a professional, youd get paid more" So what exactly defines a "professional" web designer? I get paid for my services and I am good at what I do. My degree is technically not web design ... so I am not sure if the degree indicates professionalism, because technically I'd never be a "professional" web designer since it is not my specialized area; but I am designing web sites for a living. Someone please define this for me!

    In areas where licensing is required, like a professional engineer (PE), they could say you don't have the credentials to say you are professional if you don't have the license and you would be in violation of the law if you called yourself a professional engineer. In web design, there are no professional licensing requirements. Therefore, if you get paid for any web design, you are a professional web designer. Just like getting paid to play football makes you a professional football player. Once you get paid you are no longer an amateur.
