Is it weird to help someone with their groceries if I don’t work at the store?
-
I was at the grocery store and there was a lady carrying heavy groceries and putting groceries away in her car and I am not an employee at the store but however, I was walking passed her and I just asked in a kind way: “Excuse me miss. Do you need help? Let me give you a hand here.” And she said: “Thank you.” And I know I was a stranger to her but I just didn’t want to act creepy going near her car because people are so paranoid nowadays of creeps in the parking lot who can be a serial killer and I am not of course. I am a nice guy that wants to help people so my question is, if I don’t know someone but I think a lady has her hands full with groceries, is it a good deed to still help them with their groceries even if they think they got it and don’t need help and even if I don’t work at the store assisting them? Or is it creepy to approach them and offer help? Also this includes if I pass out carts to people in the store and say, “Here do you need a cart?” and that I don’t work there, is this using social skills and me not having to be a store employee? I know most people give me dirty looks when I do that.

No it's not a bad thing that you are doing, I think it is a kind and considerate jesture and I think you are a nice person for wanting to do it. Isn't it a sign of a terrible world when a person who wants to be kind has to ask if it is the right thing to do? That say alot about our society today, dosen't it. More people should be like you.

You done goodly. When I first read your question I thought to myself, it is fine but you need to politely ask first. If she didn't want your help you can just walk away knowing you tried to do a random act of kindness.

No it will scare people. there are so many rapists in car parking lots now Only do it if it is a man like you. Women can help women with shopping. Men can help men with shopping.

No, I don't think it's weird. Twenty years ago it would have been expected to be done. It's great to keep being kind to people and offering a hand whenever possible, it's just a shame that in this world we don't trust people anymore. I'd continue helping - there are a LOT of people who are welcome to a hand, especially older women who need help with their groceries. Just stay away from purses, obviously, and stick with putting groceries in the trunk as this avoids and intrusion of privacy in what's in their backseats. Keep helping people! Thanks :)

I think the first gesture is sweet, if they look like they are struggling a bit. As for handing out shopping carts when you are not working there, that is a bit creepy to be honest with you, unless you pass a struggling person and you have nothing really in your cart and you can give it to them. Social skills are a great thing to exercise, but don't overdo it. People are very independent these days! But its whatever makes you feel good.
