Did I say the wrong thing during my interviews?
-
I'm one of lucky many who have gotten laid off for a little over a year now. I recently had 4 interviews with best buy for the same position. I was told it was a red flag that I was unemployed for so long a year and 3 months to be exact. Basically he told me that there's no reason people don't have jobs at this time and why I have been unemployed. I told him the truth about how I've just been unlucky and how I've had to step up and help my family at the moment with my grandparents. I explained how my grandfather has advanced cancer and my grandmother isn't doing to hot either. Should I have withheld that information from him? I just got that vibe he didn't believe me or I said the wrong thing. Maybe it was to personal of a thing to say? I haven't heard anything for about two weeks(two of the managers were out of town for a week.),I'm calling tomorrow to ask politely if I'm still being considered for employment and if not, if there's anything I could improve on.

Answer:
He very well may have thought that if you got hired, you'd still be expected to keep with the routine with the family and sick grandparents. It would be a fairly logical thing to think ! Some baggage that this manager may not have wanted. I don't have an idea of how to account for the past year.

I'd have kept that to myself. Now they will think you have to much responsibility to turn up for work all the time.

The guy was fishing for excuses and you indulge him with plenty. You should not have excused yourself from being employed, it was not your fault and this guy tricked you. Employers do not like to hire people that always have excuses for showing up late, not show up, are always sick, there is always an emergency etc. In places like that the turn-around is very high and they like to hire people that want to stay., If you started on a lengthy explanation bout your numerous family calamities, he definitely saw a red flag there. Next time when they ask you, simply say that you have actively been looking for employment in an stable corporation that values talent and that you are looking forward to be part of the right team. Say that looking for the right job is a full time job on its own and that you have been working on your resume and acquiring skills to help you achieve that goal. Good luck

You never need to go into any personal info, you can just say you had family emergencies you needed to handle, period. A year is a red flag to most employers, and since you have that going against you, you'd be better off registering at some employment agencies and let them do the screening for you, that way you don't have to deal with these people.
