What does your ugly christmas sweater look like?

Debating on whether or not to go to my work Christmas party. Have nothing to wear but jeans and a sweater.?

  • My work Christmas party is tonight and I'm thinking about going, since I usually never do... but the invite says to "look spiffy" and I don't have much money or anything to wear really. I've gained some weight and only have some jeans (pretty casual ones) and a sweater (with a fake undershirt attached type) to wear. I'm not sure if I should go. I drove by the place and it looks like everyone is all dolled up. This is my first year being single in 10 years as well and I'm nervous to go to the party alone but wonder if I should at least make an appearance since I do have a babysitter for my young son tonight. Thoughts? I'm not sure if I'm appropriately dressed and wonder if jeans, a casual sweater shirt and some old scuffed boots will make me look silly? Advice?

  • Answer:

Well, there are always ways to make a casual outfit look hip and spiffy enough for any upperclass party, but remember that it is Christmas time and the mall is open late! If you know where to look, a blazer jacket, a sequined shirt and some black slacks with a long dangling necklace should really make a great impression and say: I care. without being overly dorky. If you run by Macy's or another department store with a makeup department, you may even be able to get a quick makeover to top it all off! Good luck and God bless!! David-Taylor

If you would feel self-conscious, don't go....but do not waste that babysitter, either. Go out and do something fun, because you deserve it! Being single for the first time in 10 years is a BIG DEAL and you deserve a little pampering tonight...so get your nails done, call a friend up and go to dinner, or treat yourself to a movie, even if you have no one to go with--take care of YOU, DOLL! You have to look at those people 5 days a week anyway, why waste tonight with them, feeling self-conscious and having little fun! Happy Holidays to you and your son!

I don't think wearing jeans and a sweater would be all that bad, as long as you feel comfortable with it. If you think you'll feel silly and out of place, it's probably best to choose something else. Do you have any dressy tops? Blazers? Dressy sweaters? Cardigans? Any of those would look nice with jeans. But if you have a babysitter, and you want to go to the party...go for it!

It is hard to have a good time when you are worried about your appearance so I doubt you will have a good time unless you can dig up something you feel good wearing. If you have time and really would like to go, borrow an outfit from a friend or (if you can) run down to the mall. You probably have something in the back of your closet that you haven't worn in a while that you could dress up with a little effort. You got some good advice from others about what to wear, or to go out somewhere else. I say doll up and go out whether you go to your company party or not.
